Principles as both goal and guidance.
The three main goals of the house are at the top of each page here (energy miserly, maintenance-free and actual next-gen automation), but those are not its only goals
This section of the site goes into details on the principles and philosophies guiding this project.
Still, it's tough to be absolute; trade-offs and compromises are a necessary part of practical, pragmatic life; those, too, deserve to be addressed.
Under this section, we address:
ENERGY: One of our primary three goals is to be energy-miserly and intelligently reduce our use of energy resources
ENDURANCE: To be a 40-year-maintenance-free structure, a house must be designed to endure
AUTONOMY: Where we use the term autonomy, we mean a house that can think for itself, a house that can see to the needs of itself and its occupants without requiring human participation. It's generation-after-next ultra-automation. The idea is to relieve its occupants of many chores while providing an environment that makes achieving other goals easier
SECURITY: Keeping ill-intended others from doing us harm and, with luck, stopping them from doing harm to others
PRIVACY: A home is neither a publication nor an entertainment for strangers, so measures for metaphorically lowering the shades must extend beyond the physical walls and into barriers to electronic intrusion
SAFETY: Dangers abound in any normal home; some can be anticipated and reduced through material and handling choices during construction, some through safety measures that automation can provide, and there are more
SURVIVABILITY: Acts of God, as the insurers say, can bring wind and rain and weather against a structure and, of course, other hazards may also arise; choices can improve the chances of a house making it through most perils
COMFORT: This is not a Luxe house, designed to push posh, but it does address and accomplish comfort for its occupants in many ways
ENJOYMENT: All of the above goals can be met in a design that creates a stark and sterile environment, but this has to be even more a home, not simply a house, with deliberate attention paid to making it a joy to occupy
You will also see these same elements under the Plan tab. And you'll see us address these principles in our discussions and descriptions of the products, materials and techniques we choose. Yes, there will be places where we may stray, usually for want of a more perfect product as things come together, but never far.
